My name is Daniel Khachaturyan. I am 18 years old and live in Laval. I have studied for a year and am on my 3rd semester in the pure and applied science program at Ahuntsic College. This glossary was is made in hopes to aid those who have taken an interest in psychology and wish to learn more. This glossary should give a basic understanding of terms pertaining to this study.
Behavior
The way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others.
Example: Kyle's behavior is quite concerning.

A common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act.
Example: Depression is major issue in today's society.

Disorder
An illness or condition that disrupts normal physical or mental functions.
Example: My job consists of helping those with mental disorders

Emotion
A natural instinctive state of mind deriving from one's circumstances, mood, or relationships with others.
Example: Ever since dad died, my emotions have been a mess.

Identity
The fact of being who or what a person or thing is.
Example: Someone stole my identity and impersonated me to get money from the government.

A disease or period of sickness affecting the body or mind.
Example: There's been a rampant illness spreading throughout the local population.

The state of your psychological and emotional well-being.
Example: My mental health has been suffering due to work.

The biology of the nervous system.
Example: The study of neurology is very important to the advancement of our knowledge of the brain.

An extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something.
Example: I can't stand being near dogs due to my phobia.

A medical practitioner specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness.
Example: My psychiatrist recommended that I should focus on stuff that brings me joy.

The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.
Example: Psychiatrists originated from the concept of psychology.

Stereotype
A widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing.
Example: The stereotype about Mexicans severely misrepresent their culture.

Stigma
A mark of disgrace associated with a particular circumstance, quality, or person.
Example: The stigma towards those suffering from mental disorders is heavily reducing our abilities to treat them.

Symptom
A physical or mental feature which is regarded as indicating a condition of disease, particularly such a feature that is apparent to the patient.
Example: These symptoms make me believe that the patient is suffering from schizophrenia.

Treatment intended to relieve or heal a disorder.
Example: The therapy sessions have been a great help for my mental well being.
